ABaaniCD is sweet cotton candy with a dash of lemon !
ASHOK’s FIVE reasons to watch “AB aani CD” the Marathi film that had to be curtailed in the theaters owing to the lock down and is now streaming on Amazon Prime. This is a simple, breezy watch with the big draw being Amitabh Bachchan making his debut in Marathi.
1. The film deals with the subject of ill treatment meted out to seniors in our own families and how the respect and prestige accorded to them depends not on their age or stature but on the associated reputation that springs from their friends or acquaintances. The other aspect of the film is the touch of nostalgia with Amitabh in a role that only he could do justice to. The show Kaun Banega Crorepati needed someone of his stature since the show was about upliftment of the common man and needed credibility of the host. In much the same manner, he plays the protagonist’s childhood friend here.
2. Director Milind Lele pegs the film on a simple premise and keeps it simple all along. Screenwriter Hemant Edlabadkar joins in to tell the story of Chandrakant Deshpande a retired arts teacher who finds new-found respect when it becomes known that he and AB were friends in school.
3. The film rests squarely on the shoulders of veteran actor Vikram Gokhale. He has acted with Amitabh in films like Khuda Gawah and Agneepath. Gokhale puts in a towering performance here.
4. “AB aani CD” also marks Amitabh Bachchan’s debut in Marathi. He had earlier made a special appearance in the film “Akka” in 1994.
5. The film is set up on what is actually quite a flimsy premise; the treatment though stands out for its simplicity while dealing with a common problem in India often brushed under the carpet; not withstanding this, the film leaves you with a smile on your lips.
“AB aani CD” is not an outstanding story or a technically fine film. It is a testimony to what a simple premise can be built up to on the back of excellent acting and a light touch treatment. Watch this film for the special cameo that AB puts in at the end and watch it for a happy and pleasant film.
